Despite the recent rumors, it is likely that for many years to come, we will hear about GTA 6. Naturally, no doubt that's why it's in Rockstar Games ' hands. Red Dead Redemption 2 was only about six months old so don't get excited about a GTA 6 news soon. This is the usual strong type of Rockstar. In November 2011, GTA 5 was announced more than 17 months after the release of Red Dead Redeemer in May 2010. However, despite the absence of official news, a multitude of GTA 6 rumors have not stopped emerging. They clearly go from being completely plausible-a game which has gone on to be set in several US venues-to being totally ridiculous. What has Rockstar said about GTA 6 on the record?

In a 4-part interview with the Develop magazine, which opened online the rumor mill, Rockstar North's former president kicked the next series entries in 2013:

“We don’t know what GTA 6 will be, but we’ve got some ideas,” said Benzies in the interview. “We’ve got about 45 years’ worth of ideas we want to do. We’ll pick the right ones. It comes from the idea first. Where it is going to be set is the first question. That then defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in."
Naturally, Benzies did not give much of what form GTA 6 is going to take and recently left Rockstar North in a rather harsh environment. However, the tried and tested development of the GTA-series is unlikely for Rockstar, where the construction of a world comes first with characters and structures laid on it. GTA 5 is a brave step towards changing template by more than 1000 developers from different studio sites all over the world. Indeed, the location is probably already set: at E3 2015, we discussed with a software provider who suggested that GTA 6 work has already been well underway.
When will the GTA 6 release date be?
Short story: if Rockstar had confirmation of GTA 6 the day after Red Dead Redemption 2 was released (26 October, 2018-put it in the diary), then we would wait around 22 months–so August 2020, based on historic delays between console GTA announcements and releases.




In reality, that was not what Rockstar did and said it wouldn't expect anything to hear in 2019. That is why it sounds more likely to release' Fall' 2020. In previous console games, you can see the gap between announcement and release below (we ignore the handheld versions).

We have some dates approximated, but this table shows the difference between the' Notification' and the' Release' of GTA games and the time between major entries.

Of course, Rockstar can attempt to minimize the window between ad and release, but that runs contrary to everything we know about hype pre-release cycles and the pre-order drive. However, a digital "surprise" release is still a more viable, if absurdly bold, consideration when physical stores continue to decline.
Even though GTA 6 would be launched at present, the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 would still be 67 months. The last major gap has been 47 months, from Gay Tony's Ballad to GTA 5. If the starting date was Fall 2020, which is much more likely, this gap would be nearer than the average console generation of 83 months between GTA 5 and GTA 6.
